The testimony of the employer of Wakar Ahmed.
Wakar Ahmed in careless times…
“We were digging our garden at this time. Wakar, who was working from time to time for me, was closer to the fence. I was somewhat farther. A young man stopped with a little motorbike, he was caring two young children with him and told us: A car fell to the train tracks. Run over there to help. I have the children with me and I can leave them alone. I did not even have time to talk to Wakar. He did not even wait to open the door -it’s a safety door because of the dogs and only I can close it open it.- He straddled the wall of the yard and came in second in the lines.
Shortly before we were told from the passerby about the accident, we had seen the car passing down, in low speed. Normal speed. I called immediately 100 (the police department number). They started asking me about things that at that point, and until now, seemed kind of crazy: how many persons are in the car? how exactly is car fallen?
I thought the most sensible thing, that the OSE (Hellenic Railways Organization) would be informed and will stop the train.
I arrived immediately at the tracks. At that time it was only Wakar trying to turn the car on the other. He called the other three children, his immigrant friends from Pakistan, and arrived very fast. People started gathering. Maybe up to 25 persons. The two elderly inside the car were hurt. The mans was left outside the car window, apparenlty broken, and I heard him begging to put it inside of the car. From the side that the train came, there was the roof of the car and the wheels towards Athens. Windows were half-open and man was in the passengers seat. None of them was wearing their seat-belt, I think thats why, when the car overturned, they were found in different seats.
We were at the point for approximately 45 min., in between I made 4 more calls to 100, but nor police came, nor Ambulance. And of course, as it was tragically proven, nor UCI was informed about the event. In my opinion, for the death of four people, is 100% responsible the police. Except from me, me daughter in law also called them over 5 times. And other people were calling them. Desperately, I can tell. When they came, it was all over.
The time that the train showed up, scary near the car, since the spot is «blind»,there were 7-8 people. Hooked on the car, however, fighting in every way to turn it around in a straight position, was small (Humayun Anwar) and Wakar. Wakar wasn’t inside, as it was written. He had just broken the window of the car, with Gashi that he took from the garden that we were digging, and had only put one foot inside. When they yelled «TRAIN», my daughter in law saw it first and started shouting with all the power that she had, all managed to jump left and right. Everyone, except from the two boys that were on top of the car. In seconds, the fatality had occurred. To me, these two boys, but also their friends that are still alive, are true heroes. I saw with my own eyes their heroism. I saw with my own eyes Wakars’ unselfishness and his instant reaction when he heard about the car in the train tracks. He vanished and immediately went on place to help. Whatever we say about their action, is more than enough. Heroes-heroes”…
Extremely mad at the beginning -«because I read somewhere that Greeks didn’t help at all»- his daughter-in-law didn’t want to speak at all. I beg her to help me do something «to vindicate the memory of the dead».
Fragmented and angry, she confirmed the words of her father-n-law kai truly convinced that «there is no doubt that the kids and the elderly, beside from the train, their cause of death was also the police officers delay. While beg them to rush to the spot, they were asking me incredible things. I was telling them that I am home and I was just watching from a distance what was happening and they were asking me «how many persons are inside the car?» or «how many minutes before the car has fallen on the tracks?», «what is the car’s license plate?» and all those incredible things. When from any moment the train could come. And of course, police came just after the accident, a little more than 45 minutes after we warned them.»
She seemed angry also with Wakar for being mulish and he wouldn’t listen. When I screamed that the train was coming,so loud, that until now,10 days later I have a sore throat, he remained in his position and tried to get people out. «I’m saying to her -this exact act is that makes him a heroe» and probably she agrees. «They left very unfairly» merely tell me. «If the police was not indifferent they would all be alive.»
The two elderly people
Bell home of elderly couple in Ekali
After days of persistent reportage, I could be able to find some evidence about them. In a vast expanse of green, in Ekali, is located the house of the couple, that became the cause, unwittingly, of the Kryoneri tragedy.
The husband, 86 year old Admiral, named Athanasios Tzouvelis, had as a daily habit, taking his wife (whose name I couldn’t find) and going for a walk on these neighborhoods. With his green Rover, they were shopping and exchanging opinions with other residents of Agios Stefanos, Krioneri, Drosias and Anoiksis. A lot of people knew him and are talking about him, those who knew him with good words.
Nobody knows with certainty what happened that fatal day. I heard two versions that I pass with caution. The one is talking about a «possible heart attack just before the train tracks, thats why he couldn’t press the brakes.» The fact, though that he was talking with the kids and asked them to put his broken arm inside the car possibly refutes such a version.
The second one reaches the limits of gossip. Take them with caution but the fact that I heard it from two different people, staying left and right of the road, should be noted. «Just before the car reached the train tracks, and because weather was very nice, windows were open and the car was moving very slow, it sounded from inside intense brawl» two people testify. Almost with absolute certainty. True or False, nobody knows. The fact is that at the point of the accident there are no traces of brake.
To pass the embankment the car and found, after overturning in the train tracks, probably preceded throttle just before. Only the couple knows the truth.
The outer door and the depth desolate, anymore, villa pair Tzouveli killed in Kryoneri
Reports show that they were childless. Probably that explains the, up to now, indiffernce from the envirnoment of the family in touch with the other kids from Pakistan. To know who were those who sacrificed to save their people. Left and right of the villa of the elderly live their nephews, but despite my efforts I was unable to communicate. The home of the elderly couple is now abandoned, proof of the information that they lived alone.
The questions that arise
If the police, according to our crosed information, was informed 45 minutes before the fatal event, why not take any steps to prevent the accident?
Updated Hellenic Railways Organization and indifferent or even not informed so that the train passes normally and cause a tragedy?
The deceased Tzouvelis A., age 86 (!) Years, led by licensed drivers or had expired, due to the very advanced age?
P.S 1 : Besides the two dead, there are two other children who have been left behind, and with denial and altruism rushed to help. Minimal obligation of the State to provide them with visas, honoris causa. As debt the local municipality to honor them for their heroic act.
P.S 2 : At the time of reporting, and while I was very close to the point of tragedy, came with his little motorbike «Jackson» sisterly friend of small Humayun. It’s something that he is doing every day From that the fated day.
The shocking video of evacuating the dead. The first retrieved from the wreckage is Wakar Ahmed. Distinguished head of the unfortunate woman.
